Skype Friend Request

After adding myself to Skype and meeting that broke black student off Craigslist London, I got a Skype friendship request from another girl.  Nothing to lose so I accepted, then immediately I assumed it was some sort of scam when I saw a pretty white girl based in Adwase Ghana.

When we started to chat my opening line was “You want me to send you some money?” No they replied so I asked to do a webcam video session which they accepted.  To protect my identity I first put a mask on and connected, sure enough it was the girl in the picture looking every bit as good if not better, I removed the mask.

Well this American tourist turned out to be a cheating  womaniser so her mum left him and returned to Ghana with Rebecca.  Her mum opened a shop back in Ghana and later was able to fund Rebecca’s schooling where she was training to be a nurse. Then about a year ago the shop was burnt down and from the shock her mother died from a heart attack.

Rebecca had to give up school and now lives with her grandfather, to get by now she sells things, even her cloths.  A real hard luck story, pulling on the heart strings.  Obviously some sort of damsel in distress scam was going down, but I wanted to play along to see if I could get to the bottom of it.  The girl on the cam was real enough, would have helped the story if she had some kind of African genes in her blood, but there appeared to be none.

I had her phone number, it was a Ghana number, I gave it a quick ring and a girl with an African accent answered the phone, but somehow the voice did not match the girl in the pictures.  Perhaps that video was a recording and had simply been edited and played back to me through Skype, you can set the video source to your DVD player.  But from memory the interaction had seemed real enough, she stood up and did a twirl when I requested and she seemed to be watching me.   So always wanting more this was the first step of the scam – to ask to see this beautiful young girl on webcam again.

Amateur Scam

But she had given the computer back to her friend now who had returned to school, the internet cafe had no webcams.  But I could buy her one, or send her the money to buy one, yeah sure.  But played along.  I wanted to see some pictures of her and gave her my email.

The next day I received some pictures of her, they looked professional, like done in a studio. She looked sweet, like how could you leave this girl to die in Ghana.  These scam artists make such basic mistakes.

Three mistakes from the picture above, the girl is more eastern European looking, she has no African ancestry.  The over emphasising of the sweet girl rather than an amateur everyday shot. The picture has been taken in a studio by a professional photographer.

Playing along

But I played along with the scam, asked her some simple questions, like why so?  I really wanted to record her on video through Skype  such a video of a hot young girl in her undies would go viral on something like youtube.  I could make some serious money out of her rather than her me.  She stuck with her story though that she had no computer with her and that she was in an internet cafe.  This much of the scam they were not moving on.

We talked about me visiting Ghana to meet her.  She would stay in a hotel with me and we would travel around Ghana.  When I knew she was genuine then I would look after her.  If ever it happened and not work out then I could just go mongering in Ghana.  She now wanted to desperately return to school, but needed funding.  I hinted I may be prepared to do this, If I could just believe she was for real.  Could I see some more photos of her maybe with her mother?

Well no pictures with her African mother, but was collecting some nice pictures of a pretty young woman but she sure was not in Ghana.  But some African in Ghana was connected to some girl in eastern Europe, possibly Ukraine.  We talk more online each night with more promises to help her if I could just believe her.  I tell her I love her and want to see some pictures of her in just some sexy underwear, just for me, so I know she in genuine and that she really loves me too.  The next day I eagerly open a new email from her with attachments.

A local pretty light-skinned girl, would have worked so much better whereby she could be photographed in context.  No what I wanted to see now was pictures of her in Ghana.  I actually asked for her to send me a picture of her in Ghana holding up todays newspaper.  Then I would know she was genuine and I would send my damsel in distress some money.

I actually opened the following attachments on my mobile phone where the screen is small and for a moment thought, yes looks like she is in Ghana   I then zoomed in and the light not look right, she had been superimposed on a Ghana street scene background.

So the scam was real enough where could I take it next.  Was quite funny, they had spent some time producing these fake pictures.  So the girl was definitely not in Ghana but in touch with someone in Ghana.

I travelled to Hong Kong so was not in contact for a while but once I returned from Asia we begin chatting again and was not really in the mood for playing along and just told her you must think Im stupid!, these pictures are obvious fakes.  So ends the damsel in distress from Ghana.  Billions of pounds are lost each year with scams just like these.

Most scams are via dating websites again with some handsome man or beautiful girl from the west trapped in Africa with nowhere to go looking for a knight in shining armour to rescue the marrying maiden.  Lovely pictures though, the video was something else, in the future will be ready with my record button.  Not get to the bottom of this scam though, what was the connection of this girl with someone in Ghana?
