Destination Germany

Well I had one weeks holiday left to use up and a mongering trip abroad was in tall order. Although I have done a long haul mongering trip before of one week to Thailand many moons ago, I not feel up for that this time around what with the time difference and all. Not since exploring mongering opportunities closer to home I mean western Europe a few years back I was now ready to return to Germany. Those Germans know how to monger and the laws there are in a mongers favor.

Booking the flight into Hamburg and out of Berlin with Easyjet on my preferred dates was easy enough the times were good too for around £60 each way. I don’t like the early flights especially on the return home flight, it fucks up your last night!  I was having a problem booking a hotel room in Hamburg though, Even with hostelworld’s abundance of budget rooms, it seemed everywhere was fully booked over the first October weekend period.

Maybe Saturday was not a good day to arrive in Hamburg but wanted to experience the Reeperbahn at its best. Eventually managed to book a room for a minimum of 4 nights through Easyjet hotels at the budget Kieler Hof in the St Georg part of Hamburg right next to the Hauptbahnhof.  St Georg is also Hamburgs second red light district after the Reeperbahn.  I would only stay 3 nights though but this was the best deal I could get at 44 Euros a night.

I must say though – one problem with visiting 3 diverse German cities in one grand whore mongering trip – like Hamburg, Frankfurt and Berlin – is it takes 3 times more research. I wanted to experience the best each city had to offer. Come the first week of October and my entire trip was all planned out and booked up, flights hotels and trains.

I find its best to book everything up in advance else you get lazy, you wake up in the morning and just extend your stay where you find yourself. Again I learnt this on an extended mongering vacation in Thailand where I intended to visit Kuala Lumpur but each morning could not be arsed with it all. So I was all set to visit Hamburg one of the worlds most infamous red light districts. And thats what I do…

Kieler Hof, St Georg

Flight with Easyjet from London Gatwick only took 1 hour 20 minutes, no problems straight through departures via online checkin and only carrying hand luggage again another lesson learned on these European mongering trips.  Straight through customs in Hamburg Germany and out into arrivals. Onto the metro for a few Euros and 25 minutes later I arrive at the central station Hamburg or Hauptbahnhof.

You buy tickets from a machine at most 2 Euros a single trip. But no one ever checks, a few times I just simply forgot to purchase a ticket. The U-Bahn runs until 3Am in the morning and then starts again at 5Am. Hamburg is a pretty safe city too.

And so I make it to the infamous Reeperbahn with over 500 clubs and bars. I guess sailors and mongers have alot in common with Hamburg being a busy port city. Passing ships in the night, not round long enough to strike up a meaningful relationship but still in need of a release with a hot young thing!  Not so many of the punters these days are sailors though having just docked at the port, more tourists and locals out on the town.
